Trinity CollegeFounded by Queen Elizabeth the first of England in 1592 on the site of an Augustinian Monastery. Her aim was to “civilise” the Irish and cure them of Popery. Founded by a woman it was the first university in these islands to award women degrees in 1904. Four hundred years ago Dublin people were allowed to graze their pigs and cattle on Hoggen Green a space directly in front of the College, there were executions here also. It’s a residential university and some students are lucky enough to live in the elegant 18th century Quadrangle. The world famous Book of Kells is displayed in the Long Room. Stolen in 1007, the book remained at Kells until around 1653 where it was sent to Dublin for safekeeping. The sense of antiquity is heightened by the cobbles and the cast-iron bollards and lamps. Dominating the square is the Campanile, occupying the spot where the Medieval monastery of All Hallows had its Bell Tower. The library of Trinity College is one of the world’s greatest research libraries and holds Ireland’s largest collection of manuscripts and books. The libraries first major purchase of books was in 1601 where 4,000 volumes were bought in England. |
