St Stephens Green.

Sir Arthur Guinness of the famous brewing family arranged to have the Green which in his time had become neglected and closed to the public, re landscaped and the Green was opened to the public in 1877. Dubliners simply call this charming park in the centre of the city, “The Green ”When Dublin was a walled city the Green was a common grazing ground. “Where citizens could walk and talk and take the open aire...”

The Green is famous for its lake, with its ducks and opportunistic seagulls. The lake is fed from the Grand canal at Portobello. This is a haven of tranquility for Dubliners and visitors alike who want to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Sunbathing and open air concerts are popular during the summer months. The park measures exactly one quarter of a mile on each side. On the north side of the Green stands the famous Shelbourne Hotel. A peculiar sight every June is to see the traffic stop while the offspring of the ducks who hatched on Leinster Lawn are marched the short distance to the lake in St Stephen’s Green.
