Oscar Wilde Memorial.

Merrion Square is the home of Danny Osborne’s Oscar Wilde memorial (1997). Oscar reclines on a large quartz rock. Observing the literary master is a pregnant female figure, representing his wife Constance, and a male torso representing Dionysius, the God of Drama and Wine. Each is mounted on a pillar on which is written a selection of forty eight of Oscar’s witticisms. A selection is presented below.

“Duty is what one expects in others , it is not what one does oneself.” (A Woman of no Importance 1893.)

“I have nothing to declare except my genius.” (1881).

“A man cannot be too careful in his choice of enemies.” (The portrait of Dorian Grey 1891)

“My first impressions of people are never wrong” (The Importance of Being Earnest 1895.)

“The unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable.” (On fox hunting 1893.)

"The truth is rarely pure and never simple.” (The Importance of Being Earnest 1895.)

"The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.” (The Picture of Dorian Grey 1891.)
